• 4.0 out of 5 stars from MJ -- quietly insightful : A relative recommended this book to me because I am at a crossroads in my life and have been reading books on mindfulness and meditation. Hall's thoughts on the healing potential of spirituality fit well in that genre even though he wrote this book a century ago. As a physician, his sense of spirituality draws from the natural world more than religion, and for that reason his perspective would appeal to a wide audience. Anyone suffering from anxiety, mild depression, or feelings of disconnection from the world will find gems of wisdom in this compact book on healing the mind. This edition has a few minor typographical errors (mostly words merged together), but it is far better than many the public access e-books I have read in the past. Maybe something which would encompass different points of view from different spiritual disciplines. But he lamost exclusively centered his message on the Christian philosophy. Nevertheless, and in overall, I'd say it's a good reading that can be squeezed to enjoy of its benefits. This was written just over 100 years ago and lays out the beginnings of the joint effect of both emotion and the physical body together determining health. That concept is still not a stable part of medicine today. The author, himself a physician, sees the need for the melding of the two. Very interesting and uplifting read. I think there is some excellent yet obvious pearls of wisdom that we probably all inherently know but yet seem to shine light a bright light when someone says it to us. I would have given it 5 stars but rarely do I give anything 5 stars. This came fairly close though. It reads much like a father, or parental figure would speak to a child. I knew what the book was before I read it, so was not disappointed. Indeed, I am not a fan of James Herbert, having been scared half to death by his books when I was a young, impressionable (and probably stoned) teenager.
